Menu : Types and Differences



Menu is a list of all food items that are offered at an establishment (restaurant, cafe, bar, hotels, etc.) during its opening time arranged in a particular order, it also include beverages. 


There are 2 types of Menu that are offered in Food and Beverage Operation, they are table d'hôte and à la carte, there are few others Menu that are offered but they are just the adaption of the two menus.

Table d'hôte

It is a French word, meaning "Food from the Host's Table".

It offers a complete meal at fixed price for the guest no matter how much food he/she takes.

Operation where this type of Menu involves are in :

1. Banquets

2. Buffets


A la carte

It is also a French word, meaning "According to the Card/ Customer's Order".

In this type of Menu. a varities of food items are written on the Card/Menu, they are individually priced and the guest pays the amount of whatever he is ordering.


This type of Menu are most common in Restaurants, Food Stalls, Bars, Takeaways, Fastfoods, etc.
